10. Clicks & Whistles Cranberry Goose (Embassy)

This one really put these guys on the map, and damn if I don’t often find myself humming the “Cranberry Goose” melody. The album is at once both soulful and banging.

Broodlings interview with Percussion Lab

We recently caught up with Bretson Mann, one half of Embassy Recordings artist Broodlings. The Atlanta native shared some thoughts on juke, paranoia, and the future. Check the duo’s feature mix here.

Atlanta’s Embassy imprint is still relatively fresh on the scene, but the young label has already started to carve a place for itself within the world of Stateside bass music thanks to its inventive and forward-thinking takes on juke. Embassy’s next endeavor, which sees a release tomorrow, taps a burgeoning producer from its own scene, Broodlings, who infuses a decent amount of soul (via some skillful sample chopping) into his juke/footwork-infused compositions throughout his forthcoming five-track EP (artwork above). “Fading” is one such example, and sees the Atlanta resident utilizing a reconfigured soul sample and slightly off-kilter digital synth loops to serve as the song’s melodic and chordal cues while Broodlings’ 808 percolations give the track a steady, infectious bounce.

Wheez-ie dishes out his underdog favs on ClusterMag

For our fourth <300 installment, we got up with Boston’s own juke/UK bass wizard, Wheez-ie AKA Matt Mauldin, to dig for 5 tracks on SoundCloud with less than 300 plays and serious power. His new EP, “Keep Yer Chin Up” is out NOW on Distal’s Embassy imprint. Between this and the last one, it’s clear he’s got an ear for rhythm and he’s keeping it close to the ground. So when we hit him up, we knew he’d provide. From the Chicago old school to the new, from England to New England, and back to his motherland in Houston, this kid slings some quality tracks. And you know we gotta big up our man Boylan for making it on this one…

In case you needed any more proof that juke had moved far beyond its roots in the streets of Chicago, here we have an EP from a Houston native who’s now based in Boston while studying music at the renowned Berklee College of Music. Those who only champion juke of the utmost authentic origins may see this as a red flag, but a conversation about musical authenticity in the internet age is requires a much larger discussion, and should almost always be superseded by a simple question: Is the music good? In the case of Wheez-ie, it’s pretty good.

Distal and Mite’s Embassy imprint is set to drop its eighth release next week, a five-song EP by Houston producer Wheez-ie (who happens to be living in Boston these days, where he’s a student at the prestigious Berklee College of Music). Titled Keep Yer Chin Up, the EP features three frantic, juke-leaning originals and a couple of somewhat toned-down, but no less bass-heavy, remixes from DJ Assault and Salva. Here we have the latter, which finds the Frite Nite founder adding some groove while taking the pace down a notch, ultimately winding up with a creative and danceable piece of bass music that owes a lot more to old-school electro than new-school footwork.
